Many of you have been wondering where is the registration for this year’s merit badge college at Duke University.  Well, wonder no longer, here it is.  This year’s event has been more challenging than normal, not the least because this year Duke changed their policies this past August concerning outside events that involve minors and didn’t inform long-time groups that have used their facilities.  We didn’t find out until we went to publish the event and then found out we needed to get approval at the Dean or Provost level.  The past week and a half we have been frantically trying to jump through those hoops so that we would be able to provide you with an event this year.  I am happy to announce that we have finally succeeded.  However, there are several things to note about this year.

  1. Duke requires a new permission slip from all parents/guardians this year.  When you register you will be given a link to this form.  Please make sure to print and fill out this form at home and have your scout bring it with them to the event.  This will allow your scout to participate in this event without problems.
  2. Any adults that are volunteering will need to provide their email address and then go through Duke’s form of Youth Protection Training.  While we have done this in the past, it is more important this year as Duke will conduct a background check of all volunteers that could take 3-10 days to complete, and since we are strongly asking every troop that attends to provide a volunteer we will need everyone to sign up as soon as possible so the background check can complete in time.

With that said, you can register for this year’s event starting at midnight tonight at the following URL:

Note that like last year, we have one class for Cub Scouts.  This will be the Nova STEM Award, Fearful Symmetry.  This class will only last a half day.  Please note that this class is ONLY for Cub Scouts and all other classes are only for Scouts BSA.  If you have a Cub Scout, please only register for this one class, not any other classes.

I look forward to welcoming you to this year’s Duke Merit Badge College and STEM University on Saturday, October 26 at 8am.
