Scouting Units

There are many Packs, Troops, Crews, Posts, and a Ship to choose from in Durham!

Cub Scouts is for youth in the kindergarten through fifth grades, or 5 to 10 years of age. Children who are older than 10, or who have completed the fifth grade, can no longer join Cub Scouting, but they can join the Boy Scouts, Venturing or Sea Scouts program.

When you’re a kid, fun comes first. Cub Scouts lets kids have fun while teaching them skills that will help them later on. From the thrill of shooting an arrow to learning how to transform a block of wood into a race car, Cub Scouts is one thrill after another. This program is tailored to match each age in a young child’s life, and shows kids that doing their best is the most fun of all.

Boy Scouts is for youth 11 to 17 years of age. Cub Scouts may advance to Boy Scouts if they have earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Award and are at least 10 years old, or have completed the fifth grade and are at least 10 years old. With more than 130 Merit Badges—from Archery and Art to Welding and Wilderness Survival—Boy Scouts is the ultimate form of learning by doing. Boy Scouts explore their interests and improve their skills while working toward Scouting’s highest rank: Eagle. Add in outdoor adventures, hiking and camping, and Boy Scouts gives youth experience that will benefit them throughout their life.

Venturing is for youth who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age. Venturing gives young men and women access to a range of programs and empowers them to create their own experiences. It brings Scouting values to life through both high adventure outdoor activities and challenging real-world projects.

Sea Scouts is for youth who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age. For over 100 years, Sea Scouting has promoted better citizenship and improved members’ boating skills through instruction and practice in water safety, boating skills, outdoor, social, service experiences, and knowledge of our maritime heritage.

Exploring is for youth who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age. Exploring provides hands-on activities and one-on-one mentorship for youth looking to discover their future. Whether you’re a local organization looking to strengthen the community or a young person wanting to uncover the possibilities of your future, Exploring is a great place to start.
